Speakeasies were formed in the 1920s as a means to get around the everyday hassle of law enforcement watching for people violating the 18th Amendment. As a result of Prohibition, the speakeasy was an established institution. For every legitimate saloon that closed as a result of the new law, half dozen underground palaces sprung up. These speakeasies were one of the many ways that people during the 1920's and early 1930's obtained illegal alcohol. By the middle of the decade there were thought to be 100,000 speakeasies.
"The Speakeasies' Swing Band!" was formed in Thessaloniki, Greece. Nobody knows when! Some place their birth in September 2009 when Manolis, Panos K. & Panos V. met Caterina. Others believe that the band was shaped when the four friends took to the streets to play "christmas carols". There are also those, more down to earth, who set the beginning of the SSB on their first appearance in the SwingALONICA on May 2010. By that time, Giannis, Thanos & Ilias had already joined the band. In October Stergios joined the band too, bringing us to the band’s current form.
Since then, the band gave several concerts in bars, concert halls, festivals and on radio and television, in both Greece and Europe. The most notable appearances include Lindy Hop Greece’s festivals (SwingALONICA & Swing'n'Swim), Live on Cooradio, support act for Cherry Poppin 'Daddies and Parov Stelar Band, Thessaloniki European Youth Capital 2014 Candidate City Street Party, the opening ceremony of the 46th Dimitria Thessaloniki Concert Hall, Festival of Alternative Music in Vafopoulio institution, Hep Cat's Holiday in Sommerset, UK and 15th International Jazz Festival in Bansko, Bulgaria.
In March 2011 the band composes its first own song "Bright Lights Late Nights" for the creation of a music video. At the end of the same year, they repeat the same experiment which resulted in a new video, "Black Swamp Village" starring the internationally renowned dancers Kevin St. Laurent & Jo Hoffberg. Thus, their first album "Bathtub Gin" is released in July 2012. At the same time their song "Bright Lights Late Nights" becomes part of the German collection "Swing Style Vol.3"
